The book by Jacqueline Harpman „I Who Have Never Known Men“ is a dystopian novel about forty women, who were imprisoned in an underground cage. They are guarded by men, but they cannot interact with them.
The protagonist is a young-unnamed girl who has no memory of the world outside of her cage and ends up to lead the other women in a plan to escape and explore a desolate, post-catastrophe world they find upon exiting. Generally, the narrative explores a plethora of themes such as humanity and freedom.
So the book starts with the women protagonists seize the opportunity to escape the cage, because of an alarm sound that caused the guards to flee. We see them emerge onto a vast, barren plain, and discover the world above that has been devastated and that they may be the only survivors.
What I really enjoyed is the philosophical questions about what it means to be human without men, the nature of community and isolation, and what freedom looks like when forged from nothing.
